Michael B. Jordan recently discussed the ongoing development of “I Am Legend 2” with People magazine, revealing that the script is still in the works and there is no set filming start date. The sequel to the 2007 hit film starring Will Smith was officially announced in March 2022, with Smith reprising his role alongside newcomer Jordan. The script is being penned by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film with Mark Protosevich.
“We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” Jordan shared with People. “There’s no release date or anything like that yet. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming, but I’m really excited to work with Will. I’ve looked up to him for a long time, and getting the chance to act with him is something I’m really looking forward to.”
Last month, Smith expressed optimism about the sequel during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. He stated, “The sequel is looking good. We’ve got some really solid ideas. I think Michael and I will make it on screen together. That guy is the real deal, so I’m excited to collaborate.”
“I Am Legend,” directed by Francis Lawrence, originally starred Smith as Robert Neville, a virologist who becomes the last human survivor in New York City following a plague that turns people into vicious mutants. Neville’s quest to find a cure eventually leads him to other survivors. The film opened with a record-breaking $77 million in December 2007 and grossed over $585 million worldwide.
At the Red Sea International Film Festival earlier this year, Smith confirmed that the sequel would follow the alternate ending from the 2007 film’s DVD release, in which Neville survives, rather than the theatrical ending where his character dies.
“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close; the script just came in,” Smith said about the sequel. “For those who are true ‘I Am Legend’ fans, you know that the theatrical version ended with my character’s death. However, the DVD had an alternate ending where I lived. We’re building on the mythology of that version. I can’t reveal much more, but Michael B. Jordan is definitely in.”
It seems the script for “I Am Legend 2” still requires some refinement before the project can move forward.
