‘Inside Out 2’ Surpasses ‘Minions’ in Animated Film Rankings, ‘Despicable Me 4’ Closes in on $230 Million

This past weekend marked a significant milestone for animated films at the international box office, with Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Universal and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 both achieving impressive earnings.

Inside Out 2, which has already established itself as the biggest hit of 2024, has now climbed to the fifth spot on the list of all-time highest-grossing animated films, surpassing Minions. The film’s global earnings have reached $1.22 billion. Over the weekend alone, “Inside Out 2” garnered $78.3 million across 45 major markets.

Following closely behind, Despicable Me 4 amassed $73 million from 73 markets over the weekend. This latest installment of the popular franchise has brought in $106.9 million in foreign markets, bringing its worldwide total to $229.5 million.

In the United States, the sequel featuring Steve Carell reprising his role as Gru, who faces off against Will Ferrell’s French supervillain character, dominated the Fourth of July box office, earning $122.6 million domestically. Internationally, it also performed well, especially in Mexico with $12.6 million, and in other countries such as Brazil ($5.9 million), Spain ($5.7 million), the Netherlands ($2.6 million), Indonesia ($2.6 million), and Poland ($2.5 million). According to Universal, the film’s performance is comparable to Despicable Me 3 and slightly below the international results for Minions.

In addition to animated films, other genres also saw substantial earnings. Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One brought in $21.4 million from 67 territories, including eight new ones, increasing its international total to $83.8 million. Globally, this horror prequel has earned $178.2 million. Meanwhile, Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die earned $8.2 million across 66 overseas markets, bringing its overseas total to $182.8 million and its global earnings to $360.2 million.
