Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars project is gaining traction. Lucasfilm has brought on screenwriter Jonathan Tropper to craft the screenplay for the film, which first emerged in November 2022 but was delayed as Levy focused on his work on the latest Deadpool & Wolverine movie.
Tropper has frequently collaborated with Levy, having written the script for Levy’s 2014 family drama This Is Where I Leave You and penned the Netflix film Kodachrome (2017), which Levy produced. Their most significant joint venture to date is The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds, which stands as Netflix’s third most-watched original film. Notably, The Adam Project featured a weapon reminiscent of a lightsaber.
Addressing his evident enthusiasm for Star Wars, Levy previously mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that while the weapon in The Adam Project wasn’t technically a lightsaber due to rights issues, it still demonstrated his fandom for the Star Wars universe.
Beyond his collaborations with Levy, Tropper is recognized for creating TV series such as Banshee and Warrior, and for his role as showrunner of the Jason Momoa-led series See.
Levy’s schedule remains packed, leaving the timeline for the Star Wars project uncertain. Alongside his work on the final season of Stranger Things, which he both produces and directs episodes for, Levy’s name has been linked to Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers film, although this remains unconfirmed.
Lucasfilm hasn’t released a Star Wars film in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, instead expanding its television presence on Disney+. The next Star Wars film, Grogu & The Mandalorian, directed by Jon Favreau, will transition characters from the TV series The Mandalorian to the big screen, with a release date set for May 22, 2026.
Jonathan Tropper is represented by CAA, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, and Felker Toczek.
