On May 31st, Marvel Updates sparked speculation on X by suggesting that characters from the critically maligned “Inhumans” show would return in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Anson Mount, who portrayed Black Bolt, swiftly debunked this claim.
Mount’s response was clear: he is not slated to return for “Avengers: Secret Wars” at this time. While it’s common for Marvel actors to mislead about their involvement in future projects, such as Andrew Garfield’s denials before “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Mount’s assertion appears definitive. He stated unequivocally that he hasn’t been approached or contracted for the role.
Future Prospects for the Inhumans in the MCU
Does this mean we won’t see Mount’s Black Bolt in the MCU again? Not necessarily. He recently reprised his role in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” appearing in a comic-accurate costume as a member of the Illuminati. Despite his character’s brutal demise at the hands of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) in the film, the multiverse concept leaves the door open for alternate versions of Black Bolt to appear in future projects.
The rumor about the Inhumans’ return in “Avengers: Secret Wars” was surprising, given Marvel Studios’ apparent desire to distance itself from the original “Inhumans” series. Initially announced as a feature film, the project was later adapted into a limited series for ABC. The show, centered around a secret society of superpowered beings, failed to resonate with audiences and is one of the MCU’s lowest-rated productions.
While the future of the Inhumans in the MCU remains uncertain, Anson Mount will continue his role as a leader in space in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Season 3 of the series is set to premiere sometime in 2025.
